A personalized book in 2 minutes: what's realistic and what isn't

David Pelayo · Founder of Nexo Apex S.L. · Published May 10, 2026 · Updated July 20, 2026

If someone promises you a complete personalized book in 2 minutes, they're either using very few pages or lying about the time. This page explains the pipeline's real timings so you can decide whether waiting 5-10 minutes works for you.

The real clock

You upload the photos, pay, and stay on the screen. Seconds 1-10: Rekognition reviews the photos. Seconds 10-40: gpt-5 plans the 20-page story. Minutes 1-6: gpt-image-2 draws the 20 illustrations, one by one, keeping your kid's face consistent across pages. Minutes 6-7: ReportLab assembles the PDF; SES sends the email. Total: 7 minutes in the average case; 10 in the worst.

It isn't magic or artificial overhead — it's 20 illustrations that an image model has to generate one by one so the protagonist doesn't change faces between page 4 and page 17. A parallel pipeline would be faster but would break the consistency, which is the piece people pay for.

What you DO see in 2 minutes

The cover and the first 3-4 pages. When the 'with preview' option comes back (€5.99, disabled for now while we polish the approval flow), you'll be able to see that opening in ~2 minutes, decide whether you like the direction, and complete the other 15. In the meantime, the whole book arrives in 5-10.

When the wait is worth it

If you need it for tonight and it's 9:00 pm, perfect — order now, have dinner, and at 9:30 your kid has their book. If you need it for the birthday party starting in 8 minutes, no. Order it the night before, download the PDF, and go with peace of mind. If you need an instant digital gift in the middle of a call — that's not us. We sit in the 5-10 minute band on purpose; pushing it down to 30 seconds would mean lower quality or a higher price, and neither pays off for the typical use case.

If 5-10 minutes works for you, the wizard is waiting. Upload the photos, pick the mission, and enter the email where you want the book delivered.

Frequently asked questions

Can a personalized book really be generated in 2 minutes?

Almost. The pipeline takes 5-10 minutes in total — not 2. The story-planning step (gpt-5) takes ~30 seconds; the bulk (5 min) is generating the 20 illustrations one by one. If a service promises '2 minutes' for a complete 20-page book, it's either using very low resolution, very few pages, or lying about the time. Our real promise is 5-10 minutes — honest and verifiable.

What CAN you have in 2 minutes?

The cover and the first 3-4 pages. That's why the 'with preview' option exists (€5.99 — temporarily disabled but coming back): we generate 5 low-resolution pages in ~2 minutes, show them to you, and if you like the direction, we complete the other 15 pages. For 'a complete book with quality', 5-10 minutes remains the floor.

Why does it take so long?

Each illustration takes 12-15 seconds because the model (gpt-image-2) runs with quality pinned to 'low' — an explicit trade-off that keeps the cost down (€3.99 per book) and the latency reasonable. 'Medium' quality would rise to 30s per image (10 min total); 'high' to 60s (20 min total) and would force the price up to ~€10. 'Low' quality looks good visually; the real limit isn't resolution, it's character consistency — and that's maximal at any quality.

Is there a way to get it faster?

Not for now. The pipeline is serial by necessity — each page has to wait for the previous one to keep the protagonist visually consistent. A parallel pipeline would be technically possible but would lose consistency (each independent page = a slightly different face). We'd rather wait 5 minutes than break the magic.

And if I don't want to wait 10 minutes?

Three honest alternatives: (1) generate the book the night before the gift, instead of while the recipient watches the screen. (2) Use 'I'm feeling lucky' mode and upload just the photo — laIA invents everything, saving you the 30s of writing the idea. (3) If the wait is a blocker (you're at a party, on a trip, etc.), consider another instant digital gift — we're honest that 5-10 minutes is the pipeline's floor, not a flexible promise.
